K-Gr 4-A handsome crafting book aimed at the younger set. The examples here include pinwheels, puppets, and even a giant paper boat. Each project is accompanied by useful instructions, attractive photographs, and illustrations that lay out the construction steps. Many of the photos include children displaying and using their handmade creations. Rodriguez has been working with kindergarten children in Chile for 18 years; she and her students came up with the ideas here from found materials and recyclables in an effort to teach lessons about art, recycling, and the environment. Written by a kindergarten teacher in Santiago, Chile, this colorful craft book uses simple materials to make things that look childlike and fun. Rodriguez, who notes that many of the projects represent traditional Chilean crafts, shows how to turn common materials into appealing creations, such as dolls, piñatas, a puppet theater, and a remarkably large newspaper boat. The many color pictures include photos of the completed projects, often shown with children, and charming digital drawings illustrating the directions. Although this is only available in a paperback edition, the cover is relatively sturdy, and the quality of the pages is quite good, allowing for excellent reproduction of the illustrations. Originally published in Chile, the book's instructions include the occasional metric measurement or Briticism (pegs for clothespins), but most terms are clear from the illustrations.
