Gr 4-7-Conversations with 12 scientists including Jane Goodall and Robert Ballard. Interviews feature introductions by the subjects, explaining how they became involved in their particular field of interest, followed by a set of 10 questions, developed with the help of students. Queries include "What is the scariest thing that has ever happened in your work?" and "What was your biggest discovery?" Many of the articles conclude with a page devoted to a special project or program connected to the scientist's work complete with address or Web site information. The large, full-color photographs give readers a good idea of the on-the-job conditions of each discipline. The lack of biographical information limits the usefulness of this book for reports but the short articles and question-and-answer format will appeal to reluctant readers. While cover art that depicts younger children climbing, swimming, etc., may not attract older readers, the overall message of following your dreams is one to which all children will relate.-Michele Snyder, Chappaqua Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Gr. 3^-6. Each chapter consists of an interview with one of 12 adventurers--among them, a rain forest ecologist, an anthropologist, and an arachnologist. The breezy narratives explain how childhood interests led to exciting careers. The accompanying photographs, including ones of the adventurers as children, make young scientific dreams excitingly real. Each individual answers the same 10 questions, ranging from ones about the practical and difficult aspects of the career to ones about the scariest and most exciting things that happened on a job. Six of the chapters conclude with a "Check it out" section listing other sources of information regarding the individual's work. The Web sites listed are mostly geared to educators, and the book's glossary is oddly anemic (explorer is defined, but ecology is not). However, this well-organized book, with spectacular, well-placed, captioned photos, is sure to enhance classroom science studies and please the ever curious reader. --Karen Simonetti

(Intermediate) Armchair adventurers will be pleased to find their fears confirmed: four out of the twelve intrepid scientists profiled here mention snakes in response to the question, ""What was the scariest thing that ever happened in your work?"" As in Pat Cummings's Talking with Artists books, each interview consists of a brief autobiographical summary followed by responses to a list of ten questions, the same ones for each person. ""Put together with the help of some thoughtful and inquisitive young students,"" the questions range from ""What was the job that got you started in your field?"" to ""What is left for you to explore?"" The answers, of course, vary, and they reflect not only differing concerns but the different voices of the researchers. Both well-known (Jane Goodall, Robert Ballard) and unfamiliar (bioacoustician Ann Bowles, anthro-pologist Michael L. Blakely) subjects are included, and photographs of the scientists/explorers at work are provided. A bonus: several chapters conclude with classes, clubs, and websites that will allow readers further adventures of their own. r.s. (c) Copyright 2010.
