[DEBUT] Newcomer Utkin's fresh entry into the stable of modern graphic novels introduces Gamayun, a major figure in Slavic mythology. Gamayun is a human-faced King of Birds who, like many mythological characters, possesses wit, power, and an agenda. The story is easy to follow and flows lyrically, tracing our protagonist's journey from a great war to a chance encounter with a human merchant who is offered a reward for saving the king's life. Perhaps the strongest aspect of this tale is Utkin's striking art style. Bright and colorful illustrations fit the theme well, evoking the power of Gamayun and the strangeness of the places to which he and the merchant travel. As a whole, Utkin's rendering of Russian mythology succeeds through its use of simple folklore and inspired artwork. Utkin¿s work is mesmerizing and haunting both visually and narratively, his striking characters wavering between majestic and malevolent. Though much of the story occurs in the wild, Utkin switches up earthy hues for bright backgrounds and beings that cover the range of colors¿notably shades of bright blue and gold.
