BookList ReviewBasketballBooklistFrom Booklist, Copyright (c) American Library Association. Used with permission. Focused primarily on men's professional basketball, but with appreciable attention to the WNBA and nods to the NCAA, this title in the Record Breakers is a fun and informative if not comprehensive resource for young basketball fans. The book takes a somewhat scattershot approach to the sport, with some groupings clearly defined: The Shooters section covers NBA career points leaders, WNBA scoring records, and Michael Jordan's mind-boggling exploits; The Defenders breaks down the NBA records for blocks, steals, and rebounds and again includes WNBA. Others are more randomly assembled, such as the spread that features the tallest and shortest players, a handful of college records, and NBA assists leaders. Plenty of crisp action photos and tons of stats (some of which are, of course, already out-of-date) will keep the pages turning, but kids are especially apt to enjoy exploring the enhanced online content accessed by code as a part of Weigl's AV2 imprint that supplements the reading with videos, additional Web resources, and various activity prompts.--Chipman, Ian Copyright 2010 Booklist

School Library Journal ReviewBasketballSchool Library Journal(c) Copyright Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Gr 4-6-This set is similar to the "Record Breakers" series (Weigl) in its formulaic approach and style. Each title contains two-page biographies of outstanding athletes in the featured sport. There is little information here that cannot be found elsewhere, and some of the selections are perplexing; e.g., Football does not profile John Elway, but rather Dan Marino and Joe Montana. Readers can use examples like this to elicit conversations and to support their favorite "great" who was not chosen. A code at the beginning of every title gives readers access to additional online materials, such as audio, video, and activity suggestions. The concluding chapter, "Write a Biography," has identical wording from book to book and gives the set an instructional textbook feel. Purchase if other media-enhanced books have circulated well.
