This follow-up to Where the Heart Is (2019) focuses on Rachel's little sister, eight-year-old Ivy, as the family makes a go of it in the Applewood Heights Apartments, having recently lost their farmhouse to foreclosure. For Ivy, Applewood Heights is a wonderful place with new friends Alicia and Lucas close by. They share her love of cooking and are also good at finding affordable ingredients for recipes. Ivy would happily stay here forever and can't understand why Rachel hates the apartment, and Mom and Dad work endlessly toward getting a "better" home. A more personal challenge arises when Ivy must learn to think before speaking, having failed to understand complications in her friends' lives, inadvertently alienating them. Knowles has again created a thoughtful, realistic story from multiple perspectives that illustrates how some problems can't be solved instantly. Ivy grows, as do her family and friends, and the narrative ends with a new future to tackle. Though a sequel, this novel stands strongly on its own.
